Clay

Clays are mineral-rich earth materials formed through the weathering of volcanic ash and other geological deposits. Their fine particle structure gives them a remarkable ability to absorb oils, bind impurities, and interact with water to form smooth pastes.

Because of these properties, clays have been used for centuries in cleansing preparations, poultices, masks, and bathing rituals. Different clay types vary in mineral composition, color, absorption strength, and texture, making each suited to slightly different applications.

This section of the archive gathers monographs for clays used in apothecary work, documenting their composition, behavior in water, traditional uses, and practical formulation considerations.
